In addition to the reading and textbook exercises, there are links to supplementary documents and websites, as well as all the recording and oral work to be done either in the lab or from home.  The oral exercises and quizzes are highlighted and separated out from the class session due dates.

Les pronoms interrogatifs (personnes):  Write out exercises F, G p. 407
To help you understand the interrogative pronouns and verb constructions with different prepositions, look at the following charts on the French Grammar Review pages:

We will look at these in class.  Print them out.

Chapitre 11
16 lundi 28 mars

Quiz:  Les pronoms interrogatifs; les verbes mettre et connaître.

Chapter 11 deals with finding a job. You will use the vocabulary and structures in this chapter to expand another part of your final project:  "La situation d'emploi dans ma région." Look at the "petites annonces" for jobs in your region/city.  Are there differences in the types of jobs available in the "villes principales" of your region and more rural areas/smaller towns?  Be prepared to give a brief description in French! You will be developing this for next week.  For the moment, you should get a general overview of the situation in your area.

Read p. 434 about finding a job and what is on a French CV/job ad.

We will look at the beginning of the explanation of the subjunctive mood (pp. 440-441) together. Read these pages!  Read the xerox handout of The Subjunctive that was distributed.  The most important thing is to begin studying (practicing, writing out, etc.) the conjugations of the verbs--especially the irregular verbs.

17 mercredi 30 mars

Priorities for Chapter 11:

Chapter 11 Cultural Material:

In the textbook:  Read the ads for jobs (Chapter 11) pp. 434-435.  Write out exercise A, p.  437.  Try to understand as much as you can about these ads and the vocabulary used to talk about jobs.  Remember that there is the "Lexique" at the end of the chapter to help you.  While we aren't interested in your trying to get into the French job market, there is important information in here for your final projects.  Because the job markets around the world have changed dramatically since 2008, see what you can find on the web about the employment/unemployment situation in France today.  Get a general understanding of where things stand (and bring to class the websites you've found).  Once you see where things stand in general in France, find out information about the possibilities of employment in your particular region.
What are the unemployment problems (les problèmes de chômage)?
What sorts of jobs are available (les postes d'emploi disponibles)?
What about work for the government (les fonctionnaires)?
What about those people who speak other languages or have advanced diplomas (e.g. ingénieur; cadre; enseignant(e); recherches sur l'environnement; l'écologie, etc. )?
The vocabulary on p. 446 is a handy list of useful terms to use when talking about "le travail."
Come to class with some ads that you can share.

Outline your information IN FRENCH and be prepared to talk about it in class.  This is not a formal text, but information that you are gathering.

Chapter 11 Grammar:

In this chapter we begin to work on the subjunctive mood (le subjonctif).
Read pp. 440-441 carefully (the Structure) and LEARN THE CONJUGATION OF THE VERBS INDICATED in the subjunctive.  Once you learn the forms of the subjunctive, then you need to learn when to use it--the tricky part!
Read and study carefully the forms of the irregular verbs on page 442.
Write out exercises D, E, G pp. 441-442.

We looked briefly at the discussion of the subjunctive mood on the French Grammar Review pages.  Print out this PDF (the subjunctive) and study the explanations.  They are a complement to what is in your textbook.
In addition, there are some excellent explanations/exercises for the subjunctive on the UT site:
--A Definition of Mood:
http://www.laits.utexas.edu/tex/gr/ta1.html

--Regular and irregular subjunctive forms:
Regular: http://www.laits.utexas.edu/tex/gr/tas1.html
Irregular: http://www.laits.utexas.edu/tex/gr/tas2.html

--Verb practice for subjunctive (you can choose all tenses for practice as well):
http://www.laits.utexas.edu/fi/vp/

La Phonétique Corrective:

We will be working on sound contrasts (and the phonetic alphabet).  Bring the exercises from À l'écoute des sons: Voyelles, exercises on the contrasts between |u| and |y| to class.  You will have a Forum recording of these exercises to do.  Date to be announced.

Your final project conversations are going to be Power Point presentations.

For those who do not know how to use Power Point, the Media Center (2S-114) will offer workshops on the following days:

There will be a very mechanical quiz on Monday that will test your knowledge of the verb forms of the subjunctive.

Check Quia exercises for help with the subjunctive.  Read and study the extra xerox handout of the subjunctive explanations distributed in class.

  jeudi 7 avril

On the French Forum pages:  Study the À l'écoute des sons exercises for the sound of |u|  pages 41-45.  Do the exercises and practice all the recordings (on the lab web pages for French 213, under "Phonetics exercises").  You have the corrigés for the written exercises.  After you practice, do the recordings that are indicated:
p. 42-43:  "Correction"

Take it slowly and deliberately!

Quia exercises for Chapter 11 are posted.  They are the most mechanical of the exercises to practice the subjunctive, the object pronouns and the -re verbs.
21 mercredi 13 avril

vendredi 29 avril Forum recordings:  À l'écoute de... |y| (pages 46-50). Do the exercises on page 46 and then do the following recordings:
pages 47-48:  Correction (read ALL the sentences and words)
