Back to French 113 Syllabus Page and Prof. Talarico's home page
IMPORTANT NOTE: In addition to any other homework/lab work assigned on the schedule below, the following activities are required for all four chapters and must be done regularly:
1)
Textbook:
A)
Practicing and recording the Tuyau Prononciation (recorded on your Student CD
and available on the lab website) is required. The tracks are indicated in the
margin of the text. You should practice these words/sounds until you can say
them along with the speaker on the CD. Just listening to them or
saying them once or twice will not help. In addition, you will be required to record all of the Tuyau exercises. When you
record your exercises, you will have a chance to listen to your recording and
re-record yourself, if necessary. These exercises will be graded and count as part of your oral grade for the course. The due dates indicated are the last day you can upload your recordings to the French Forum pages. The Forums will be locked at 5pm on the due date.
B) At the end of each chapter there is a page (or pages) called Lexique. This gives you a handy summary of the important vocabulary, verbs, grammatical structures emphasized in the chapter. All this vocabulary has been recorded and is available on the lab website. You must practice the pronunciation of these words and expressions.
C) The recorded conversations at the beginning of each chapter. You must listen to (and read along with) each of the recorded conversations on your Student CD. If there is new vocabulary (usually in bold print), it is part of the Lexique at the end of the chapter and you can consult the recordings, as explained above (B).
2) Quia:
Any exercises you need
to do are checked and there is a due date indicated on the Quia website.
I will be checking your progress on these exercises on a regular basis. Please
note that I am less interested in your getting all the answers right than I am
in your understanding why something is wrong. At times, I will ask that you print
out some of the exercises and hand them in in written form. Quia exercises (especially the last parts of the chapters with oral comprehension exercises) have a tendency to show up on quizzes!
3) Other Recordings, Quizzes, and Lab Work:
In
addition to the Tuyau recordings, you will be recording several
other types of exercises: How to Pronounce French Correctly; translation
exercises; descriptions of photos. You will also take oral quizzes in the lab.
4) Other Materials:
Students have access to the Rosetta Stone software to help with pronunciation. Suggested due dates are indicated on the homework pages, since the selected activities correspond to the work done with our textbook.
Students will also receive information about using the TV series, French in Action. Again, the activities are coordinated to the work in the textbook.
Both sets of materials provide excellent supplementary practice for you to work on your pronunciation, oral comprehension, and grammar.

| 2 | Wednesday, Feb. 2 | Since we haven't activated your Quia accounts
yet, you will work from the PDF file for the following Workbook exercises:--Practice sounds
and words on Workbook CD tracks 1,2. They correspond to Workbook pp. 7-8. You
can access the Workbook listening exercises (until your Quia accounts are set
up) on the lab pages. A textbook PDF file for the Étape préliminaire is available as well. Note: This is the only time you will have access to a copy of workbook/textbook materials. You need to set up your Quia accounts right away so that you can continue to do your homework. You also need to get your textbook. --Write out Workbook p. 5 III A, B (to practice copying accent marks) --Write two short
paragraphs (in English!) on the following: --Be prepared to answer some questions about the links found on the syllabus page, Prof. Talarico's home page, and the lab page. You need to start making bookmarks of these pages. The purpose of this exercise is to allow you to become familiar with the various resources at your disposal and their content. For the first few sessions of the course, you will be clicking all over the place (my pages, the lab pages, outside sites, etc.). If you get confused, that is part of the exercise! You need to become familiar with all these resources. |

(1) Information
regarding oral recordings: Practice Recording (in English) due by Monday, February 14: It is strongly suggested that you upload your recordings before the due date, so that any problems can be resolved. The practice recording is in English, to get you familiar with using the embedded recorder and posting your recordings. Written instructions for uploading recordings to the Modern Languages Forum page have been distributed. There is a brief summary here. I suggest that you do this practice recording from the lab so that someone can help
you if you are having trouble. You may, of course, do all your exercises in the
lab, but you can also eventually do them from home if that is easier for you. (2) Information about Quia exercises: The first exercises (for the Étape préliminaire are due on February 11). Quia exercises: Exercises for the Étape préliminaire are due. This is a review of the xerox handout you received and will give you practice manipulating Quia. The website is on the registration instruction sheet given to you by your instructor. The website is: http://books.quia.com. This series of exercises is a review of the xerox handout you received in class and will give you practice manipulating Quia. The website is on the registration instructions given to you by your instructor. This registration sheet contains the "Course Code" you need to match up with the "Book Key" you either purchased online or that came with a new textbook. You need BOTH numbers to set up your account. Quia exercises are found at http://books.quia.com. (See further information in the yellow box, below.) Important note: When you go to the Quia exercises, all the due dates for the individual chapter parts are given. The sections are called "Étapes" (Première étape, deuxième étape, troisième étape). They follow what we are covering in class. In the other sections at the end of each chapter there are listening exercises (called Point d'arrivée and Travail de fin de chapitre). These exercises are usually due at the end of each chapter and the due dates for each part are indicated. You must do each chapter part by the due date assigned, otherwise you will not receive the feedback you need and your exercises will come up as "late" in the results page. Assignments that are completed as "late" will be so marked by your instructor and will lower your overall homework grade.

| Some of you mentioned in your essay on French and France that you were afraid of saying the wrong thing and insulting someone. That is a two-way street, since a non-English speaker could also say things that could be misunderstood. Check out the two articles on the Supplementary Reading pages (you need your lab password and username to access them) to read the two articles, Language "Faux pas" and "Faux amis "(false friends--words that look the same but mean something different). | ||
