Affiliated Institution: The Institute for Basic Reseach in Developmental Disabilities (IBR)
Many of CSI and CUNY students in general have had placements at IBR at the undergraduate or graduate level. Much of data collection and internship training take place at IBR. Every few years, IBR is threatened to be closed down because of budget cuts. (It costs about 12 million dollars a year to maintain IBR -- a relatively small amount in the overall New York State and City budget.) Because IBR provides important services to the Staten Island Community and to the NY metropolitan area, a close-down was avoided for the time being by vigorous protests from citizens and elected officials. If you would like to make your support known, please, contact the NYC Mayor, your elected officials of New York State, and your US senators. IBR has been providing diagnostic services to the developmental disability community and research in the areas of autism, Down syndrome, mental retardation, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease. IBR provides employment to over 300 men and women.
