CSI Students Conducting Research
Undergraduate and graduate students may be required to complete a project as part of their curriculum. Such projects that involve humans as subjects may fall into one of the following categories:
- Student Practica (also known as Research Practica)
- Human Subjects Research
Student Practica refers to projects conducted by undergraduate or graduate students in order for them to gain experience in a particular research method during a particular course and involve humans as subjects (e.g., data analysis, survey, interview, observation, etc.). Such projects are not intended to contribute to generalizable knowledge (via publication or presentation) and NOT considered to be thesis related work.
If the project meets the description of Student Practica, the student and his/her faculty member are to follow the instructions found here.
Human Subjects Research is when an investigator (professional or student) conducting research obtains data through intervention or interaction with a living individual, or obtains identifiable private information about a living individual. Regulations governing the use of human subjects in research extend to use of human organs, tissues, and body fluids from identifiable individuals as human subjects and to graphic, written, or recorded information derived from such individuals. Such information is intended to contribute to generalizable knowledge through publication or presentation (including projects catagorized as theses.)
If the project meets the description of Human Subjects Research, the student and his/her faculty member are to submit an application for approval via IRBNet. If the project meets the description of Human Subjects research and will be conducted in a New York City Public School, the student must also obtain approval from the NYC DoE’s IRB.
For those students who are unsure of their research projects category, the HRPP Office strongly recommends’ that students submit a Research Determination Form (found in IRBNet).
The University Integrated IRB must review and approve any project involving humans as subjects before the project begins.
