Mathematics Classroom Inquiry

Learning comes from taking risks. Teachers may teach, but no real learning occurs until learners become active participants to make connections between their realities and what is taught. This action research class helps teachers reach their full potential in their journeys as teachers of mathematics from the Pre-K to 12th grades. The class focuses on each of the five content standards (Number and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, Data Analysis and Probability), and provides ideas on how teachers can use real-life problems, manipulatives, and mental mathematics to improve their students’ excitement about and achievement in mathematics.

The class offers a great avenue for teachers to learn how to create learning environments in which students view mathematics as useful and exciting. Teachers also learn though practice to make decisions based on the individual personalities and capabilities of their students, as well as on the diversified developmental progress of the class as a whole.

Students interested in this section should contact Prof. Kerekes by email at kerekes@mail.csi.cuny.edu to set up an appointment.
