Information about the Educational Research Seminar (EDD 630 & EDD 631)

Please note: We suggest you now begin reviewing the section descriptions and following the instructions (under “How to Contact an Instructor about His/Her Section”) for the section(s) you’re interested in to contact the instructor and see about being cleared to register for a section.

Course Registration Information

  • For those students who register before May 16
Students must first contact an instructor whose section’s focus aligns with their own interests. If the instructor agrees that the fit is good, the instructor will clear that student to register. After the instructor has opened his/her section for that student, that student can then register for that section as he/she would normally register for any class.
  • For those students who register from May 17 to August 1
Students who register late must complete a short application in Tk20 entitled “Application to the Educational Research Sequence, EDD 630/631.” This application will only be available between May 11th and August 1st; it will not appear in Tk20 at other times. The application is simple, and serves to notifiy the department of the student’s application. During the third week of August the department will place all of the students who submitted applications through Tk20—and who meet the minimal academic requirements for the class—into the various sections of EDD 630. All students who meet the minimal requirements will be placed into sections; however, the department cannot guarantee that a student will be placed into a particular section.

Until the applications are opened, you may want to read about the various, current sections, below, and make sure you meet the minimum requirements for entrance into EDD 630.

Students can now register for the educational research seminar sections for the 2013 – 2014 academic year.

Course Registration Information

To register for a section of EDD 630, you must:

1. meet the minimal academic requirements and

2. be cleared to register by the section’s instructor.

To be cleared by the section’s instructor, you should contact an instructor whose section (summarized along with preferred form of communication below) presents an area of inquiry that you feel fits both your interests and abilities. You may begin to contact instructors on March 1st for registration for the fall semester of EDD 630. You will simply register for EDD 631 during the spring semester as you would another class.

Once you contact the instructor, he/she will discuss your interests/abilities to determine if he/she also feels his/her section best fits your needs. If so, the instructor will open up his/her section for you to register to it. All students who meet the minimal academic requirements will be able to register for a section; we require the “intake interview” to ensure that this rigorous course sequence is one that will best serve you and your professional, intellectual development and interests.

Perhaps more importantly, the various sections differ greatly in the background experience required of the students; a miss-match between your expertise/interests and those required of a given section can lead to a more difficult and less gratifying experience for you. Please read the descriptions of the various sections and choose only a section you feel strongly reflects both your professional expertise and interests.
