Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST)
When to take it: after completing most SLS
courses
What it is about: scientific, mathematical, and technical
processes (23%); historical and scientific awareness (19%); artistic expression
and the humanities (19%); communication and research skills (19%); written
analysis and expression (essay (20%).
How to prepare for
multiple-choice: approx. 80 items; not a Power test; no penalty for
guessing, but don’t guess randomly.
How to prepare for essay: 300-600
words; persuasive essay.
Results: scores are from 100-300;
passing is 220 or higher; total score includes multiple-choice and essay;
results are available approximately one month after test date; tests may be
repeated until passed with no penalty

Assessment of Teaching Skills Written (ATS-W)
Elementary
level (Early childhood; birth-2; Childhood, 1-6)
Secondary level (Middle
childhood; 5-9; Adolescence, 7-12
When to take it: after completing all content and
methods courses in education; can be taken along with student
teaching
What is it about: student development and learning (25%);
instruction and assessment (38%); the professional environment (17%); essay on
instruction and assessment (20%)
How to prepare for multiple-choice: approx. 80 items; not a Power test; no penalty for guessing, but don’t guess
randomly.
How to prepare for essay: 300-600
words; expository essay.
Results: scores are from 100-300; passing is 220 or higher;
total score includes multiple-choice and essay; results are available
approximately one month after test date; tests may be repeated until passed with
no penalty

Content Specialty Test-Multi-Subjects
(CST-Multi-Subjects)
When to take it: after completing all SLS courses
and related content area methods courses in education (must complete reading
methods courses; see essay topic); can be taken along with student
teaching
What it is about: follows New York State curriculum and
standards, birth-6; English Language Arts (21%); mathematics (18%); science and
technology (13%); social studies (15%); Fine arts (8%); health and fitness (8%);
Family and consumer science and career development (7%); essay on foundation of
reading and assessment of reading
How to prepare for multiple-choice: approx. 90 items; not a Power test; no penalty for guessing, but don’t guess
randomly.
How to prepare for essay: 150-300
words; expository essay; content will require analysis of a running record in
reading.
Results: scores are from 100-300;
passing is 220 or higher; total score includes multiple-choice and essay; result
are available approximately one month after test date; tests may be repeated
until passed with no penalty

taken along with student teaching or practicum

language courses and related content area methods courses in education; can be
taken along with student teaching or practicum
How to prepare for

The CSTs for foreign languages other than
English include recorded listening and speaking components and writing
components.
Results: scores are from 100-300; passing is 220 or higher;
total score includes multiple-choice and essay; results are available
