Education Department Welcome to the Department of Education! Susan Sullivan, Chairperson Mission Statement
In the tradition of CUNY’s commitment to access and excellence, the primary purpose of the Department of Education at CSI is to prepare educators who are dedicated to improving education. Improving education requires that teachers and school leaders possess intellectual autonomy and professional responsibility. Intellectual autonomy is the ability to generate ideas in ways that are influenced but not constrained by the thinking of others. It involves continuous examination of beliefs, values, methods, practices, and approaches to learning and learners. Professional responsibility is the ability to understand the obligations of the education profession and act in ways that are in accordance with it.
