COURSES                                        
offered by the Department of Student Services


The Department of Student Services offers three courses each semester, which are designed to assist you in succeeding in your personal and academic life, and guide you in your career.

"SPD 101 - ISSUES IN COLLEGE LIFE" - 2 hours; 1 credit
An introduction to the dynamics of college life.  Through discussion of the individual’s educational goals, attitudes, and values, the student explores the learning community, educational choices and techniques to improve personal, academic and professional survival skills. The course is graded on a pass/fail basis.

*Not to be taken in the same semester with SPD 102 or SKO 100.


"SPD 102 - CAREER DEVELOPMENT" -  2 hours; 1 credit
Overview of the career decision-making process beginning with self-assessment (interest, personality, values and skills inventories), career research and goal setting.  Topics include trends in the workforce, choosing a major, resume and cover letter writing, interviewing techniques and job search methods.


"SKO 100 
- Freshman Orientation" - 2 hours; 1 credit
Freshman Orientation satisfies one of the basic requirements of the college. It was designed to assist entering students to develop survival skills related to their educational, career, and life goals. This is primarily a group process course which provides information regarding the various aspects of college life. Students are also given the opportunity to become meaningfully involved with their assigned counselor through classroom discussions, the Internet, and individual follow-up sessions.
