        Monday 23rd At [half] past 7 this morning
        a child died. I suppose it w[oul]d be about
        a year old. The mother [and] child were the
        only sent out by the Parochial Board
5      of Glasgow, the to get quit of maintenance
        money.109 The father died was killed in a
        coal mine < near Glasgow >
            about 12 months since.
        {P}oor lady, she has barely the common
        necessaries of life, and no bed. I
10    have just come in from the burial
        it was at ten o'clock. The Captain
        who is an Episcopalian read the
        Church of England service.110 The ceremony
        was very imposing, as the weather < night >
15    was very cold, part of the service was
        read down in the 'tween decks,111 and
        part at the ship's side. The Carpen[-]
        ter made a coffin for the body, a
        pig of Iron broken in three pi[ece]s
20    was put in at the foot of the
        body, and when the service was
        nearly finished the coffin was
