        One of the harness casks80 was broke
        loose and washed over the mate
        bruising him a good deal [and]
        broke his left arm just
5      above the elbows. I could
        scarcely get out of my berth for
        the water [and] wreck which was
        washed into it. The sea broke
        tho[ugh] where part of the men
10    slept81 ere it reached me, [and]
        it carried everything with it
        before it. My arms [and] legs are
        all blackened   < bruised [and] discolored >
            from the stuff
        out of the mens' house82 coming
15    in contact with me when
        attempting to get out, but they
        are better now. You may mi
        imagine what a sea struck
        us when it left three feet of
20    water in the hold. Now this
        water could only get in at a
        part of the main hatch under-
        neath the long boat, as the other
