        Tuesday 10th No doubt my beloved but
        you will wonder why a lapse of nine
        days has taken place in my journal. It
        is but natural for you to think
5      so, eh Lassie but they have been
        terrible days to me. Sunday was
        a beautiful day. In the evening
        Capt[ain] Crowe read the 107 Psalm, I read
        the 108th, Mr. Cunningham the 109th
10    [and] Mr. Sharpley the 110th.72 Then the
        Capt[ain] read a sermon. We went
        to bed and on Monday morning
        found the sea running very high
        [and] a storm likely to come on{.}
15    {D}uring the day almost all
        the sails were taken down
        the sea still rising higher. At
        Midnight the ship was hove to
        under close reefed close topsails,73
20    it blowing a tremendous gale
        [and] the sea running “mountains
        high.”74 I did not go to bed, but
        stayed up all night. On Tuesday
