        steamer <"Hercules"> towed us to Lam-
        lash and left us at four
        o'clock seven o'clock.18 The wind
5       was very light, and what was of
        it was against us. So we had
        just to tack about between
        Arran19 [and] the Ayrshire20 coast till
        about two o'clock a.m. About
10    twelve o'clock the second mate
        fell overboard. He had been on
        the bowsprit21 and let go his hold.
        A rope was thrown him which
        he caught [and] was taken on
15    board again. He was a little
        tipsy. During our tacks22 I got
        a fine view of the towns on
        the Aryshire coast, viz: Ayr,
        Irvine, Saltcoats, Troon,
