then Beloved, we left Glasgow at three o'clock on the afternoon of the 16th Sept[ember] 1848, on board of the Barque “Augusta” of Glasgow, J. N. Crowe mas- 5 ter for New York.2 We were headed down as far as Dumbarton3 where the ship stuck for want of water. On our way down I got farewell salutes from many of 10 my old acquaintances. Capt[ain] Campbell of the Screw Steamer “Fine Queen”.4 Mr [and] Mrs McLyonon [etc.] at Anchinborlie,5 Capt[ain] McAnlay{,} Capt[ain] McCall [and] some folks I 15 did not notice soon enough to know them.6 I went to Greenock7 in the tug Gulliver [and] remained there till nine o'clock in company with Donald Cam- 20 pbell, Peter McCullum [and] my brother.8 We then went to Helensburgh9 [and] remained there till between three and [End of Page 2]
