Outstanding Sites

I'll change these from time to time, adding new ones as I find great sites of interest because they approach the history of the West in a fresh and exciting way, or sometimes, just because they are so visually arresting. This list would make a good place to start for the WWW neophyte wondering what sorts of things are out there.

• An amazing site which addresses women's artistic reactions to the West is Susan Ressler's Women Artists of the American West--Past and Present site, an online course and interdisciplinary resource at Purdue University.

• One of my favorite sites is a three-dimensional model of the Great Kiva in Chaco Canyon, produced by the University of California at Santa Barbara's Department of Anthropology.

• A recent discovery is the "Who Killed William Robinson?" site at the University of Victoria, Canada; this "historical whodunnit" focuses on the murder of three Black people on Salt Spring Island and examines the charges that Aboriginal people had committed the murders. The site examines the case of an Aboriginal man, Tshuanahusset, who was charged with the murder of William Robinson, convicted and sentenced to death. This excellent site is thought-provoking and valuable for examining, as its subtitle suggests, the history of "race, justice, and settling the land" in the North American West.

• Seattle Times science reporter Bill Dietrich and photographer Alan Berner detail the history, impacts and future of atomic weapons and nuclear power at the Seattle Times Trinity Web. This World Wide Web site provides a rich source of information and links for anyone interested in the development of the nuclear age.

• The amazing NativeWeb Homepage, provides links to an astounding amount of on-line information about and for Native Americans.

• The site for the WETA/PBS documentary series on The West provides an impressive array of documents, images, and text.
