The Staten Island Museum's Archaeology Study Collection
contains several hundred artifacts formerly on loan to the CSI Library
from the Staten Island Museum, since April 2010 returned to the Museum. The Collection
was assembled over many years since the late 19th and early 20th centuries,
mainly through gifts by Island
families to the Institute.
The objects
in the Collection enabled students to visualize life in the ancient and
medieval worlds through archaeology
in order to better understand these cultures.
The goal of the curators was to have students use the objects as reference
points in order to explore distant civilizations through various media:
books,
periodicals, videos,
and web sites.
