David Smith (Jazz History) is busy in the New York jazz scene both as a sideman in both small groups and larger ensembles, and as a leader with his own quintet. He is featured on more than a dozen albums on record labels such as Fresh Sound New Talent, Steeplechase and Warner among others. His debut album as a leader, Circumstance, was released in 2006 on the Fresh Sound New Talent label. He performs in New York clubs as well as abroad, with recent tours in Germany, Sweden, Denmark and Ireland. He has studied trumpet privately with Laurie Frink and Michael Philip Mossman and classical theory and counterpoint with Donna Doyle. He has a Master of Arts Degree from the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College, and is part of the adjunct faculty at the College of Staten Island.
