The art history offerings in the Performing and Creative Arts department at the College of Staten Island/CUNY are part of the art major, the photography concentration within the art major, and a minor in its own right. There are currently two full-time art history professors in the program, Nanette Salomon and Siona Wilson, as well as numerous impressive adjuncts drawn from the New York area. Together we cover all of the major periods and methodologies of Western Art. Every semester we offer a large number of ART 100 (Introduction to the Visual Arts) courses that can either fulfill the General Education requirement or simply provide an interesting course for students looking for an elective. Additionally, each semester we offer one section each of a more in-depth survey of the history of art divided between ART 200 (History of Art until the Renaissance) and ART 201 (History of Art after the Renaissance). Again, these courses can fulfill a number of different student needs: the General Education requirements, the pre-major requirements for Art, or as fascinating electives. Art history electives are offered on a regular basis scheduled on a two year rotation. All art history courses are currently presented as power point presentations using the latest technologies. Art history at the College of Staten Island/CUNY is privileged by its New York location and makes full use of the rich cultural resources of New York City, the art capital of the world. Moreover, the presence of an active Art Gallery on campus brings original works of art, both historical and contemporary, directly to our students through various innovative exhibitions. Students are encouraged to be involved with these works in their courses and by interning in the Gallery.
