Information Literacy Learning Goals

The Library Information Literacy Advisory Council (LILAC) proposes a set of information literacy learning goals and objectives for CUNY students to achieve by the time they have completed 60 credits. The purpose is to ensure that our efforts at information literacy fully articulate within CUNY. These learning objectives have been approved and endorsed by the CUNY University Librarian and the CUNY Council of Chief Librarians, who agree to work with campus leaders, faculty and administrators to ensure that the learning objectives are met. Accordingly, the Library Instruction Program is designed to teach students the following:

  • How information is organized and how to locate it
  • How to define and refine a topic, and how to search for relevant information
  • How to evaluate information and its sources
  • How to use information responsibly

Information Literacy Assessment

The CSI Library can help departments incorporate the assessment of information literacy into their academic programs on the undergraduate and graduate levels. By working on course-specific assignments in the library, students develop the skills needed to find, evaluate and utilize research to broaden their understanding of a subject.

The Library can help you achieve your assessment goals through customized workshops and collaboratively designed assignments including:

  • Library practicum: collaborative class learning/research exercise
  • Pre- or post-tests for research skills
  • Student presentation elaborating on research methods
  • Annotated bibliography
  • Classmate bibliography critiques
  • Research journal or portfolio
  • Research proposal or paper
  • Documented speech

Information Literacy Tutorials

Students are encouraged to explore the library's information literacy tutorials to sharpen their research skills.
