The Graduate Record Examination

Applicants to the M.A. in History Program are required to take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and submit their exam results to the Program. For information about where to take the exam in the New York Area, please refer to the GRE Website at http://www.gre.org/ or to the address and phone below:
- Graduate Record Examinations
- Educational Testing Service
- P.O. Box 6004
- Princeton, NJ 08541-6004
- (609) 771-7670 Princeton, NJ
- (510) 873-8100 Oakland, CA
Careful preparation for the examination, which measures Verbal, Analytical, and Quantitative skills, should include review of the examination materials which accompany the application for the exam, as well as review of one or two of the many preparation handbooks which are currently available. Three that are useful are: Educatonal Testing Service's The Official Guide: Practicing to Take the GRE General Test; Arco GRE (Macmillan USA); and Brownstein, et al., Barron's How to Prepare for the GRE (Barron's Educational Series). These volumes are available at many libraries. In addition, 800 Score's Online GRE Preparation Course, at http://www.800score.com/gre-guide.html and Test Prep Review's information guide at http://www.testprepreview.com/gre_practice.htm are both worth examining.
