You will be given a specific question to answer in an essay. For example, for the Brent outline, you will answer the following question:

"How did gender shape Linda Brent's experiences in both slavery and freedom?"

For the outline assignments, you will submit an outline of an essay; the three outlines you write for the three outline assignments will become the basis for your final essay assignment.

The Outline:

I. Introduction--the introduction will be written out as it will appear in the final essay. Include the thesis statement, and underline your thesis statement so that I know that you know which part is your thesis statement.

II. Body Sections--make each of your points and provide support for each point drawing from the book. Include paraphrases or quotes in the outline, and indicate where you found them. You should have at the very least three body sections.

III. Conclusion--the conclusion will be written out as it will appear in the final essay.

The Essay:

Use your outline as a guide and flesh out your argument into an essay form. Make smooth transitions between your points so that they follow one after the other.

See the handout, "Some Reflections on How to Write an Essay," for some pointers.
