Due September 9: What were the five most important events which occured in the United States between 1914 and 1945? Write a brief identification for each, with a statement of why it was significant.

Due September 16: Choose one event which took place between 1914 and 1945 and look into its history. Then write a one-page summary of the event and its broader significance to the US during this period.

September 23: No writing assignment this week.

Due September 30: By now you have finished reading Harvey Green's The Uncertainty of Everyday Life. In two or three sentences only, state Green's thesis in this book.

Due October 7: By now you have finished reading Steven Watson's The Harlem Renaissance. In a brief, one-paragraph essay, state Watson's thesis and argument.

Due October 14: By now you have finished reading F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby. Drawing on readings from the Tindall textbook (on reserve) and Green's The Uncertainty of Everyday Life, explain (with specific examples) how The Great Gatsby is a commentary on the time in which it was written. This will be a two- to three-page essay.

Due October 21: Please submit a brief research note stating the artifact you have chosen for your final project and the primary and secondary sources you will use for your research (two to three pages).

Due October 28: By now you will have finished reading Rickie Solinger's The Abortionist. Write a brief, one- to two-page essay about Solinger's methodology and use of sources.

November 4: No writing assignment this week. (Enjoy!)

Due November 11: By now you have finished reading Donald Worster's Dust Bowl. In a concise, two page essay, answer the following question:

According to Worster, how did the New Deal approach the problems confronted by the residents of the southern Plains? Does he view the New Deal as successful or largely a failure in this respect? To what does he attribute that outcome?

November 18: No writing assignment this week (but start working on assignment due December 2, as well as final artifact assignment).

November 25: No class meeting; no writing assignment.

Due December 2: Write a four- to five-page book review of John Morton Blum, V Was for Victory.

Due December 9: Artifact assignment due.
