Geology Program at The College of Staten Island
Athanasios Koutavas Ph.D.
Assistant Professor of Geology

Dr. Koutavas received his PhD in Paleoceanography and paleoclimatology from Columbia University. He holds a an MS in Energetics from New York University, and a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki, Greece. Before joining the faculty at CSI, he held a NOAA Climate and Global Change postdoctoral fellowship at MIT, and was lecturer in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University. Professor Koutavas's research focuses on tropical ocean atmosphere interactions and their role in Earth's climate variability with special emphasis on the large ice-age cycles of the quaternary period. His interests include the paleoclimatic history of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, the monsoons and the Intertropical Convergence Zone; the geologic record of quaternary glacial cycles; abrupt change; and the ecology and geochemistry of marine plankton.
