Jill Lane, Program Manager for Instructional Design Renata Engel, Director Schreyer Institute for Innovation in Learning

How do you design problems that not only encourage the application of knowledge and motivate your students, but also meet the objectives of your course and cover the appropriate content? Once you've assigned these problems how do you assess student solutions? This workshop is designed for those who are familiar with problem-based learning and would like more information on designing and assessing PBL problems. In this discussion and activity based workshop our goals are to give you practical advice and materials on: How to determine the type and length of the problem; How to determine the content coverage of the problem; How to specify learning outcomes for the problem; The steps to writing effective PBL problems;
How to develop rubrics for assessing student solutions to PBL problems. Please bring a copy of your course syllabus to the workshop. During the session, you will be working on designing and assessing PBL problems in your own discipline, so it is essential to have your syllabus as a resource.
All Participants are invited to attend the ASEE Reception (6pm) and complimentary dinner (7 pm). Please attend the workshop; add new techniques to your teaching repertoire.
