STATEN ISLAND HISTORY

This is a group discussion course (not like a regular 101 History course) that will take everyone back to the Great Mastodon Era as the first indigenous people made their way to our great Island. The class will be guided through time by referring to the book, Holden's Staten Island: The History of Richmond County, which was edited and compiled by the late Richard Dickenson, SI Borough Historian. A guest speaker will be Ed Platt, who is the President of the NY Institute of Anthropology. He will provide the class with an archeological and anthropological cultural impact study from the earliest records to the present. Also speaking will be Lenape Marge and Cherokee-Mayan-Tiano Robert Boldeagle who will talk about their Staten Island tribal ancestors, where they first originated, and what their occupational life was like here and in the New York City region. Other topics will be Staten Island landmarks and the mining quarries that made an industrial impact here in our area. This class is geared to people who have a genuine interest in the Island's history and its present course.
