INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEMS (GIS)
Alan Benimoff, Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Engineering Science and Physics
GIS technology unlocks the power of geography in your data, giving you unprecedented insight and knowledge about your organization's assets and workflows. GIS helps you solve problems, increase productivity, and stay competitive. Everyone should learn GIS, because it is used in many disciplines: business, education, defense and intelligence, government, health and human services, natural resources, public safety, transportation, marketing, homeland security, geography, geology, banking, public works, police and fire departments, public works, retail, real estate, route planning, natural resource management and utilities and communication. GIS relates a map to a database. A GIS is not simply a computer system for making maps. It is an analysis tool. Advantage – it allows one to identify the spatial relationships between map features. The GIS stores data from which you can create the desired view. Register for this course to get you started. This will be one more important item on your resume.
