Adult Learning Center: Adult Basic Education and GED Prep Classes

Welcome to the Adult Basic Education and GED Prep Programs at the College of Staten Island.

Our goal is to provide quality literacy and GED preparation to adults ages 21+. We recognize that each student comes with unique personal goals and abilities and we provide our students with customized tools designed to achieve their ultimate goals – whether that be entering post-secondary education, training or employment.

Adult Basic Education and GED Prep Classes Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to attend the Adult Basic Education and GED programs?
Adult Basic Education and GED classes are offered to adults ages 21+.

How can I enroll in the program?
Leave your name, telephone number and address on the Adult Learning Center voicemail at
718.982.2174. You will then be notified by the office of the next New Student Orientation date.

When are New Student Orientations offered?

Orientations are typically offered in January, June and August. Additional information is available by calling 718.982.2174.

What happens at New Student Orientation?
At Orientation, you will learn more about the program and take assessment tests in reading and math to determine your class placement. In addition, you will be interviewed by faculty to ensure that the program is right for you.

When are classes offered?
Day and evening classes are typically offered 3 days per week, 3 hours per class, totaling 9 classroom hours a week. Morning sessions are from 9am to 12pm and evening sessions are from 6:30pm to 9:30pm.

What kinds of classes will I be taking?
Beginner through advanced levels of reading, writing and math classes are offered.

How long will it take me to complete the program?
The length of the program is unique for each student. At Orientation, you will take assessments to determine the levels at which you will start the program. You will then be placed in classes accordingly. At the end of each semester, you will be reassessed to determine your advancement to the next level.

What if I have already taken the GED test and failed one subject?
You will be placed in the GED class you have not yet passed and must demonstrate competency in that subject area before you can retake the exam. You can choose to retake the parts of the exam that you have already passed if you would like to try for a higher score or you can choose to just take the parts of the exam that you have not passed yet.

How much does it cost to attend the program?
Currently there are no costs to the student.
