About the Library

The College of Staten Island of the City University of New York offers exceptional opportunities to 12,400 students. Programs in the liberal arts and sciences and professional studies lead to bachelor's and associate's degrees. Master's degrees are awarded in selected fields of study. The college participates in the doctoral programs of the CUNY Graduate School and University Center in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, and Physics.

The Department of the Library acquires, organizes, and preserves scholarly materials in a variety of formats consistent with the college's curriculum. The Library's collection along with its high quality reference and instructional services offer students and faculty access to a wealth of information resources. Service is provided by 14 full-time librarians who hold faculty status and more than 50 full-time and part-time support staff members.

The Library is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, which enables librarians to retrieve non-print sources of information from beyond the walls of the building through online, satellite, and fiber-optic technology. The Library's Media Services makes accessible pedagogical multimedia materials to distant classrooms and laboratories by means of the campus fiber-optic network. The Archives/Special Collections Department, contains the papers of Senator John Marchi and former Assemblywoman Elizabeth Connelly. The newest unit in the Library, inaugurated in December 2004, is the state-of-the-art Digital Library Learning Lab which was created to enhance the Library Instruction program. It includes 41 multi-media capable workstations and 2 electronic smartboards.

The Library's total collection consists of approximately 229,000 books; 800 current journal subscriptions; 143 electronic resources; 2100 videos and films; and over 4000 sound recordings. In addition, the Library also maintains a collection of current textbooks donated by the CSI Student Government. These, and other course materials, are available at the Reserve Desk. The Library's online catalog, CUNY Plus, provides complete access to the library's books and periodicals, as well as access to holdings of other CUNY libraries. Wireless laptops are loaned to students for use throughout the Library Building.

The Library is located at the center of the south academic quadrangle of the campus, at the end of the Alumni Walk. This new 204-acre campus, completed in 1994, is centrally situated on Staten Island. With a population of over 440,000, Staten Island is one of five boroughs of New York City, and is conveniently accessible to Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New Jersey.
