Increasingly, courses in American universities are being taught with the Web. Syllabi, assignments and other course materials are available to students 24 hours a day, seven days a week from any Internet connected computer. In addition, communications software, such as e-mail and discussion boards, enable a more interactive educational experience which enhances professor’s lecture time, making students more responsible for their own learning. The purpose of this workshop is to introduce College of Staten Island faculty to ways of teaching with the Web and other technologies.

Objectives:

To survey current trends, pedagogies and techniques for using the World Wide Web across academic disciplines.

2. To allow faculty to experience the Web environment from a student’s perspective as preparation for class instruction.

3. To provide practical, hands-on training in the use of Web-based technologies with particular attention to the Blackboard/Course Info Course Management platform, which accommodates faculty at varying levels of technical knowledge, from absolute beginner to advanced Web developer.

4. To provide an overview of useful classroom technologies and their implementation in the curriculum.

Each participant in the workshop will develop an online syllabus and other materials sufficient to begin offering a web-enhanced course during the Spring 2001 semester. Afterward, lab sessions will allow hands-on development of these materials, which will be shared at the final workshop session. Additional follow-up and support will be provided as participants actually begin teaching their courses.
