General Description

The curriculum for the Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Work, also called the BSW, is designed to prepare students for social work practice as generalists and for advanced study in graduate schools of social work.  The BSW is recognized as the entry level by the social work profession.  As practitioners, graduates are able to work with people of diverse backgrounds and needs in a variety of settings in such fields as: child welfare, criminal justice, services to the elderly, mental health, housing, urban development, family services, developmental disabilities, health and medical care.

General education requirements are met in all degree programs. The Social Work Program includes courses in the humanities, and in the social, behavioral, and natural sciences.  Sociological theory is required, as well as 12 credits in social sciences.  The nucleus of the program is 40 credits in the Professional Foundation Content Requirement, including courses in Human Behavior and Social Environment, Research, Social Policy, Social Work Methods, and Field Work.

Fieldwork

Field Work courses are included in the Professional Foundation Content Requirement.  Field Work is designed to facilitate the integration of theoretical knowledge and professional skills.  Students are placed in health, education, and social service agencies on Staten Island and other boroughs for two semesters during their senior year.  Under the supervision of professional social workers, students work with individuals, families, groups, and communities.
